What is it about?

Twist worked with 30 students in Years 9 and 10 at Catford High School. The students were engaged in designing outward-looking campaigns that would have an impact on society. We wanted to inspire them to become 'active citizens' – deciding where changes were needed and taking responsibility for bringing about those changes.

The students worked in groups to develop their own social enterprise projects, with support from KPMG, one of the top five accountancy firms in the world. All the projects were conceived and led by the students themselves. They chose areas and issues that they felt strongly about within their local community but that also had a wider social context, including a euthanasia campaign group, a holiday club for local children and an online magazine promoting healthy living amongst young women. They consulted with KPMG's professional advisers on how best to convert their ideas into a workable business.

What are the benefits?

The project was designed to:
  • Give students leadership experience
  • Enable students to gain recognition and reward for starting up and managing a project independently
  • Enable students to gain experience of how to communicate and influence
  • Give students practical experience of working with political and social structures
