What is it about?
Twist designed and delivered Working Knowledge as a preparation-for-work programme for young people aged 16-22. It was commissioned by East Potential, who run a number of Foyers in East London. Twist then helped stimulate and support a group of participants to run Working Knowledge as an independent social enterprise. It is a bridge between employers and the community, helping to break down barriers and create pathways to improvement.
Working Knowledge can tell you more themselves:
Most of us are living or have recently lived in one of the East London Foyer. A foyer is a hostel which offers accommodation, support and training for homeless young people.
What do we do for companies? We offer a unique consultancy service for organisations wishing to have a better understanding of their East London customers including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Our clients call on us if they want to improve their diversity or their recruitment and retention of locally-based staff they need to know how local people think and make choices they want to make their community engagement programmes realistic and effective.

What do we do for the community?
We run programmes for people like ourselves aiming to boost their knowledge and understanding of the world of work. We get them accustomed to meeting senior people in employer organisations and the opportunity to use their experience to solve our clients’ problems. We build their confidence and their CVs.
What good does it do?
Our clients get to hear an authentic voice and gain business insights from the grassroots. We get to see things from the other side of the fence. We are much better prepared for work as a result of the programme. Some of us are running our own business. We have set up Working Knowledge as a sustainable not-for-profit business. As we get jobs, others are lining up to take our place on the management board.
