What is it about?

The Twist Partnership, in collaboration with the Evelyn Oldfield Unit, designed and delivered a demanding and stimulating course for leaders of refugee community organisations across London. Two programmes, each lasting five months, challenged refugees to interact with other leaders within different contexts. Through a combination of study days and visits, participants examined and evaluated various leadership issues.

The ground-breaking nature of the project inspired many partners to collaborate, including:
  • London Metropolitan University, who provided venues and catering
  • The Department of Organisational Behaviour at London Business School
  • Phoenix Business Consultants
A number of organisations provided pro bono speakers, venues and visit hosts, including:
  • Royal Bank of Scotland
  • PricewaterhouseCoopers
  • Business in the Community
  • Islington Council
  • St Mary’s Paddington NHS Trust
  • HM Prison Wandsworth
  • Metropolitan Police Service Southwark
  • The Prince’s Drawing School
  • Families Need Fathers
  • Fishburn Hedges
  • Avision
  • Guardian Newspapers Ltd
  • Independent Television News
  • Childline
  • MacMillan Cancer Relief
  • BBC
  • South London and Maudsley Hospital

What are the benefits?

During the visits to a diverse range of organisations, participants took on the role of consultants, helping to analyse the problems faced by people in leadership positions and try to find solutions. This experience helped participants recognise the validity of their own insights and input and gain fresh confidence in their ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels of corporate management. They gained awareness of the issues faced by top managers and a renewed sense of ambition and aspiration. Participants also completed an assignment on a topic of their choice, inspired by issues raised during the programme. Successful completion of the assignment resulted in certification.
