What is it about?

This leadership development programme helped empower residents of West Ham and Plaistow to take the driving seat in community development. Twist's peer-to-peer leadership networking programme links organisations in the private, public and voluntary sector, including hospitals, schools, big and small companies and statutory bodies.

To complement the practical management training already provided for the NDC, we designed an inspirational and aspirational course that would develop the participants' leadership skills. The group was challenged to ‘take the driving seat’ and consider how they could run London better, comparing their insights and experiences with established leaders in other organisations across the city. We took the group out of their familiar settings to visit police stations, hospitals and agencies such as the Corporation of London and the London Development Agency, where they were set problem-solving tasks that addressed real local issues.

What are the benefits?

The course was part of Twist’s peer-to-peer leadership networking programme, which brings together groups of leaders and potential leaders. They investigate each other's problems and work on finding solutions. Participants often find they have as much to teach as to learn, helping the hosts towards new solutions, as well as testing and developing their own decision-making and leadership skills.
